Ambode to deliver UNILAG’s 49th convocation lecture as varsity turns out 245 1st class

Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the Executive Governor of Lagos State will, on Tuesday May 7th, 2018 deliver the 49th convocation lecture at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, disclosed this at a pre-convocation press briefing held at the hallowed Chamber of the University.

Governor Ambode, an alumnus of the 56-year-old institution is expected to speak on the lecture titled: “Inclusion: The Path To a New Nation”.

Speaking further, Prof. Ogundipe disclosed that the convocation ceremonies, that will commence from Wednesday 8th to Friday 11th of May, will witness the   presentation and award of postgraduate, first degrees and diplomas to a total of 12,638 graduates.

Of the lot, 245 made First Class graduates, 1,892 in the second class upper, 2,959 in the second class lower, 1,227 in the third class while 93 had pass and another 400 in the diploma and certificate cadres.

According to the VC, further breakdown of the graduating number of students showed that 6,816 representing 53.9 percent are in the graduate cadre, and 5,822 representing 46.1 percent will be awarded postgraduate degrees.

A total of 123 will be awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree, representing the highest number ever produced by the university to date.

Providing explanation for the award of pass degree against the directive of the National Universities Commission, the VC explained that it was the decision of the Senate of the institution, saying that it will soon be phased out.

Among the 12,638 graduates are four that will be awarded first degrees in Chinese language and three with outstanding results of 4.97 CGPA.
