Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed the outgoing Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Peter Fayose, on watch list over corruption related offences he is being invested for.

Copy of a treated letter said to have emanated from the EFCC, signed by Acting Executive Chairman of the anti-graft organization, Mr. Ibrahim Mustapha Magu, and sighted by The DEFENDER, suspected that Fayose would possibly escape through any of the borders to evade investigation.

Copy of the treated letter.

Referenced CR: 3000/EFCC/ABJ/EG/TA/VOL.59/010, dated 12th September 2018, the letter was captioned: “Request for watch-Listing of persons. Case of conspiracy, abuse of office, official corruption, theft and money laundry” and addressed to the Comptroller General of the Customs.

In the content the EFCC boss, referring to the caption, said: “The underlisted suspect is under investigation in connection with the above mentioned offences and there is reasonable suspicion suggesting that he may likely leave the country either through the land borders, Airports or Seaports in order to evade investigation.  Hence, you are kindly to watch list and arrest him.”

Fayose, however, swiftly reacted to the broken news of his name being on the watch-list of the Customs wondering how he name would be placed on watch-list after he had notified the agency that he would surrender himself on October 16.

Fayose tweeted: Peter Ayodele Fayose✔@GovAyoFayose@officialEFCC putting my name on watch list after notification of my coming is not only political but petty. I’m not among those who are afraid to face tomorrow. Nobody is God. They should expect me on October 16, 2018. I will remain in PDP not minding their intimidation.”

The embattled, outgoing governor recently wrote a letter to the EFCC telling the agency that he would surrender himself to at given day, which by implication means that after handing over the reign of office to Dr. John Kayode Fayemi he will head straight to the EFCC office and surrender himself.

But intelligent security officers, especially like those working in the nation’s anti-corruption agencies, may have gone extra-mile ahead of the writer of the letter to convince them that the letter by the governor might be a ploy to post-date the agency so he can escape from the country before the said date, our findings suggested.
