The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it recovered about N5 billion cash in the last two weeks from houses of two individuals.

Acting chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu, said this when he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes, chaired by Rep Kayode Oladele (APC, Ogun) for the 2017 budget defence.

Magu said last week the commission raided the house of an individual and recovered $9.72m and another £750,000. He however did not give the name of the individual.

He said “About two weeks ago, we recovered N1.5bn from one individual in Kaduna, a public servant. Yes, N1.5bn cash from a public servant. So, we do a lot of recoveries, but it has to go through a lot of court processes.”

Giving a breakdown of the achievements the commission recorded in 2016, Magu said they secured 135 convictions, recovered assets worth N102.9bn, $8.296m, £29,155, 117,004 Canadian dollar, 806.50 Dirhams and 2000 Rupees.

He said the commission also got 25 interim forfeiture orders and that five final forfeiture orders were entered in its favour.

He added that they also opened new zonal offices in Kaduna and Ibadan and re-opened that of Maiduguri as well as recruited 199 Detective Inspectors and 331 Detective Assistants.

Magu appealed to the lawmakers to increase the commission’s personnel proposal of 2017 from N7.127bn to N9.692bn to accommodate the 1500 newly recruited cadets, whose total emoluments stand at N2.565bn.
