Effort of the some Federal lawmakers to re-order the sequence of the timetable for 2019 elections has been described as unconstitutional.

Giving this description during an interview with journalists in Abuja on Sunday was Senator representing Imo North at the Senate, Senator Benjamin Uwajomogu, who said the move was targeted at President Muhammadu Buhari ahead to frustrate his re-election.

He said the action violated the provision of the Nigerian Constitution which only empowered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take such decision, stating further that it was such understanding that encouraged him to join his colleagues who protested the passage of that portion in the amended Electoral Act.

Recall Vanguard had reported on Saturday that how APC lawmakers were behind the re-order of the sequence of the election timetable.

Watchers of event described the fact that APC lawmakers behind it as not being done in the interest of either the party or the nation but just to ensure that Buhari does not get back to power due to his kind of administrative style that does not go down well with them.

But Senator Benjamin Uwajomogu expressed confidence that the lawmakers would not get the two-third majority to defeat President Buhari on the passage of the amended Electoral Act, implementation of which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has hinged on Buhari’s will to sign but that it would maintain the status quo should the President decides not to sign it.

Nwajomogu said: “I have flipped through the Hansards of the 1960 parliament, the Second Republic and the Third Republic National Assembly Hansards, and couldn’t locate where they ever inserted the sequence of elections in their Electoral Act. I stand to be corrected.

“There may be different reasons, but be rest assured that when Mr. President vetoes the bill, majority of us will support the veto. It is becoming clear by the day, that wittingly or unwittingly, their target is Mr. President, and many of our colleagues will realise their mistake and change their mind. Be rest assured that they can’t garner the proverbial two-thirds majority in both chambers.

“Let me ask you, what do I tell my constituency? That I am voting against President Muhammadu Buhari who is re-constructing Enugu-Okigwe-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt, Enugu-Onitsha, Second Niger Bridge, Aba-Calabar, dualisation of Owerri-Aba highway, among other federal roads. Roads abandoned for over two decades?

“I believe that the South East will benefit more politically if we support President Buhari for another term.”
