Gov Ahmed, JAMB Registrar Oloyede, Bolaji Abdullahi, Ayo Salami, others pay Akanbi last respect, as ex-Appeal Court President laid to rest

The remains of late pioneer Chairman of the independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), Justice Mustapha Akanbi, has been laid to rest in his country home of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, along with other dignitaries thronged the venue of the burial to pay their last respect to the late judiciary icon.

Specifically, stateholders in the nation’s Judiciary including a retired President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, pioneer Grand Kadi of Kwara State, Justice AbdulKadir Orire, Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Sulyman Kawu, Mallam Yusuf Ali (SAN), Adelodun Salman (SAN), Kehinde Elena (SAN), Saka Isau (SAN)and Kwara State Grand Kadi, Justice Ola AbdulKadir were at the funeral to be part of last honour for their late colleague.

Also at the funeral were former Registrar/Chief Executive of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, former Minister of Sports and National Publicity Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, former Grand Kadis of Kwara State Imam Oba Fulani, AbdulMutalib and Solihu Mohammed, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman AbdulKareem, Vice Chancellor of Kwara State University, Prof. AbdulRasheed Na’Allah and Vice Chancellor Al-Hikmah University, Prof. Ibrahim Taofik.

Former Kwara State Chief Judge, Justice Raliat Elelu-Habeeb, Rector, Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Mas’ud Elelu, former Minister of Transport, Bio Ibrahim, former Speaker, Kwara House of Assembly, Babatunde Mohammed, members of the state execution council, and prominent Islamic scholars from far and near also found their way to the funeral to be counted as part of the Islamic funeral rites of the diseased.

Late Akanbi was buried at his Agba Dam GRA residence in Ilorin at about 3 p.m on Sunday.

The Chief Imam of Ilorin, Alhaji Mohammed Bashir, led the Jana’izah (funeral) prayer which lasted for less about 10 minutes.

In his brief sermon at the funeral rite, the chief Imam prayed Allah to grant Akanbi Aljanat Fiddaus (eternal rest).

Until his death, late Justice Akanbi was the first Wakili of Ilorin.

In 1992, the deceased was made President of the Court of Appeal, a position he held until retiring in 1999.

He was the founder of Mustapha Akanbi Foundation.

Akanbi was appointed ICPC Chairman by former president Olusegun Obasanjo in 2000 and served till 2005.

He was born on Sept. 11, 1932 in Accra, Ghana.
