The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Sunday, urged Muslims to start looking for the new moon of Rabi’u Thanni 1439 AH from Monday.

This is contained in a statement signed by Prof. Sambo Junaidu, the Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto and made available to newsmen.

It said: “This is to inform the Muslim Ummah that Monday, Dec. 18, which is equivalent to 29 day of Rabi’u Awwal 1439 AH, shall be the day to look for the new moon of Rabi’u Assani 1439 AH.

“Muslims are therefore requested to start looking for the new moon on Monday and report its sighting to the nearest district or village head for onward communication to the Sultan.”

The monarch prayed for peace and unity of the country and urged Muslims to also fervently pray for Nigeria’s sustainable development and growth.

It would be recalled that the issue of new moon was heard only at the approach and passing of Ramadan fasting period until the sitting Sultan, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, devised the monthly search and announcement method, which have really united the Muslim Ummah of Nigeria for over five years now in term of announcement and embracement of new moon sighting declaration in the country.
