*Draft Law specifies condition for Al-Majiri system

A draft law to domesticate Child Rights Act in Katsina recommends death sentence or life imprisonment for sexual abusers of children.

Parents who subject children to begging or hawking, depriving them of school, will also pay up to N20,000 in fine or get  prison time not less than one month.

For almajiris, the proposed law permits children to be separated from their parents but only on grounds that the parent or guardian shall provide care, food, clothing and other necessities for the child.

The technical committee working on the draft law has presented it before the state commissioner for women affairs for onward transmission to the governor.

Secretary of the committee Fatima Jibo said it took a lot of commitment and hard work from various stakeholders to arrived at the draft law.

According to her, government should provide all necessary support to the child protection unit of the state police command for efficient and effective implementation of the law.

Responding, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Badiyya Hassan Mashi assured that the drafted bill will be handed over to the Governor for the next line of action.
