President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision recognizing June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day and honouring the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections, Alhaji Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, has continued to resonate as, this time, Nigerians in the Diaspora say the decision, described by many as coming “unexpected quarters”, has made the nation’s citizens abroad admire the President as very honest, righteous and upright leader, out against compromise of justice for injustice.

Canada-based Battles Against Corruption in Nigeria (BACN), through a statement by its President Mr. Waheed Seriki, gave this accolade in a message copy of which was emailed to The DEFENDER from the nation’s city of Ontario.

According to the message, Mr. Seriki said:

“For the first time in the history of Nigeria, millions of Nigerians all over the world believe they have president that deserves to be  proud of as an upright and righteous person that hate injustice and maltreatment of fellow human beings.

“President Muhammadu Buhari hatred for injustice and inhumane treatment of fellow human beings made him shed his pride and ego to apologise to Abiola’s family and other victims of cancellation of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections in Nigeria, which was a historic day for Nigeria.

“It therefore made great sense when President Muhammadu Buhari, after 25 years of annulment of the all-popular election, publicly apologised to the family of MKO Abiola and all victims of the annulment, which the world acclaimed was the freest and fairest election in Nigeria.

“Buhari not only apologised for the Ibrahim Babangida’s military regime’s wrong to Abiola but he also recognised him as the winner of the election and posthumously honored him with the highest honor in Nigeria, Grand Commander of Federal Republic (GCFR).

“Alhaji Babagana Kingibge was honored as GCON and Chief Gani Fawehinmi also honored as GCON for the pains and suffering they went through due to the annulment of the most freest and fairest election in Nigeria in 1993.

“This Buhari’s action ignites the hope of Nigerians in the country’s democracy. Most Nigerians, who went on exile and vowed never to vote in Nigeria election again are now having change of mind. They are ready to come back home and vote for Buhari’s second term as president, to continue his good work of rebuilding, reviving and revitalising Nigeria with effect from 2019.

“Most Nigerians believe and are convinced that presently, if there is anyone that can be trusted for his ability to bring the positive change Nigerians have been crying for since our independence, it is Muhammadu Buhari.

“Nigerians see that all Buhari has been doing since he became president of Nigeria in the last  three years is to transform the country into modern a State, give citizens good quality of life and give hope to more than 180 million Nigerians, who had lost hope in Nigeria because of massive corruption in our system.

“Buhari sees that the major obstacle that stands in the way of Nigeria’s economic, political, religious and infrastructural development is corruption. He strives, working hard everyday, to fight the parasite that is destroying our system and well being of our people.

“The looters of the Nigerian commonwealth as enemies of the country, who are determine to use their ill-gotten wealth to fight Buhari’s government in the incoming election, so that Nigerians hope for brighter future can be lost again.

“What the Nigerian looters and the powers behind them forget is, they may have the ill-gotten wealth to fight Buhari’s second term in office as president, but Buhari has the electorates to win the election and shame them with their stolen resources of the country,” BACN said in the message signed by its President, Waheed Seriki, in the Canadian capital city of Ontario.
