The Southern Mandate, a forum of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) members, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to either consider its former National Chairman, Chief Tony Momoh, or Engr. Buba Galadima as the next Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

The Forum, which has its membership in the 17 Southern states, made the call in a statement issued and signed on Saturday in Abuja by its National Coordinator, Comrade Ikonomwan Francis.

The association said such decision from President Buhari would correct the wrong noted in the appointment he had made so far.

While asking Mr. President to drop the embattled SGF to face prosecution from the anti-graft agency without delay, they said his replacement with either Momoh or Galadima would serve a thank-you message to those who delivered 12 million votes to him in 2011 on the platform of the defunct CPC.

Part of the statement read, “We wish to reiterate our earlier position that the key appointments Mr. President has made so far are occupied by strangers who do not share the same vision and mission of President Buhari for a better Nigeria. For instance, the suspend SGF Babachir Lawal, came from the blues to occupy the all important office of the SGF.

“Prince Momoh and Engr. Galadima are men of implacable character who are co-vision bearer with President Buhari. These men made a very strong foundation for him.

“We are aware that Engr. Galadima turned down three major juicy appointments from former President Olusegun Obasanjo. We also have it on record that former President Goodluck Jonathan offered him FCT ministerial appointment and a cash offer of N2billion to abandon Buhari’s  project but blatantly refused the juicy offer.

“On the other hand, Prince Momoh is Buhari personified – who has sworn in many public fora that the day he will take bribe, thunder will strike him dead. It is mind blowing that these men are not in Buhari’s cabinet today.”

Tony Momoh

Born in Auchi, Edo State on 27th April 1939, Prince Tony Momoh, the 165th child of King Momoh I of Auchi Edo State in South South geo-political zone of Nigeria, is a veteran journalist, politician and lawyer.  Momoh, who was appointed General Manager, Newspapers Division of the Daily Times of Nigeria by Major General Muhammadu Buhari during his military regime as Head of State (1984 – 1986), served as Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture (1986 – 1990).

He attended Government School Auchi (1949–1954) and Anglican School Okpe (1954).  Momoh was Pupil Teacher at the Anglican School, Auchi (January–December 1955) and Headmaster at the Anglican School, Ubuneke, Ivbiaro, Owan Local Government in the old Western Region now Edo State (January 1958 – December 1959).  He went to the Provincial Teachers Training College, Abudu, Edo State and Government Teachers College, Abraka in Western Region (1960–1961).  He later attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (September 1964 – October 1966) where he earned a degree in Mass communication, and then the University of Lagos where he studied Law. He attended the Nigerian Law School, Lagos (October 1974 – May 1975), and was called to the bar in June 1975.

The Prince of Auchi, Tony Momoh, later became Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nigerian from 1991 to 1993. He was appointed a Member of the Edo State Economic Advisory Committee in 1991, and a member of the Nigerian Press Council in December 1992.  As of 1996 Momoh was one of the directors of the Newswatch Magazine, said to have a circulation of 150,000 copies in Africa, Europe and North America.  Momoh was Director of the Alex Ekwueme Presidential Campaign Organisation in 1999. He was chairman, Media and Publicity of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) Campaign Organisation in the 2003 and 2007 elections where Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) was candidate. He was also Chairman of the Political Committee of the Muhammadu Buhari Organisation.

In January 2011 Momoh was appointed Chairman of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the build-up to the April 2011 national elections, with Buba Galadima appointed the National Secretary.  Soon after being appointed, Momoh said the CPC would bar any of its aspirants to become candidates if they were to engage in corrupt practices or thuggery during the primaries.

Buba Galadima

Buba Galadima is a Nigerian politician who was appointed National Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) party, formed in the run-up to the 2011 national elections as a leading platform for former military ruler General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd).

Buba Galadima is an engineer by training, a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University. and hails from Gashua, Yobe State. He participated in the 1994/5 Constitutional Conference.  Galadima was Director General of the Nigeria Maritime Authority (NMA) from 1996 to 1998.

During the Nigerian Fourth Republic, established in May 1999, Galadima became a chieftain of the leading opposition party, the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP). In June 2002 Galadima was interviewed on a proposal by President Olusegun Obasanjo to restructure local government in the country.  He expressed his party’s opposition to the move. He said that Obasanjo, “the usurper president of this country”, was trying to sneak in the changes surreptitiously, giving state governors the right to appoint unelected officials to run the local governments, but also introducing Consultative Assemblies for regions and thus undermining the powers of the states.

On 29 April 2004 Galadima was arrested in Abuja by officers from the Department of State Services (DSS).  Amnesty International expressed concern that he was at risk of torture or ill-treatment.  As chairman of the mobilization committee of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) Galadima had planned to be involved in an anti-government protest which took place on 3 May in Abuja and Lagos. He was released without charge on 13 May.

He was National Secretary of the defunct CPC.

  1. Few years ago, Buba Galadima was a staunch Buharist who strongly hated PDP
while Gulak used to be a staunch Jonathanian/pro-PDP.
Today, it is the exact opposite— Buba Galadima is now pro-PDP and a strong hater of PMB/APC while
Gulak is now pro-APC and a huge Buharist.
