“Now that they failed with UNILORIN, they seem to have designed another tactics involving other universities justifies to confuse our already ailing education system in Nigeria currently being revived by the Buhari administration. What positive contribution can any of these academic unions lay claim to have made to our educational development in Nigeria?” The respondent asked.

The University of Ilorin management has said that the newspapers’ report of tuition fees hike by 38 Nigerian universities, listing UNILORIN as part of them, is nothing but a hoax as according to it there is no iota of truth in the press report.

In a statement, issued on Tuesday by its Head of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, copy of which was sent to The DEFENDER, the UNILORIN stated categorically that those behind the news so published did not only misfire but that they more importantly overshot the runway.

Reports in the media (not The DEFENDER) on Tuesday said some academic unions of Nigerian universities claimed that some Nigerian universities had increased their tuition fees.

But Kunle Akogun said not only that there was no time management of UNILORIN, listed by the unions to be part of the 38 universities, had sat to take such decision but also that the institution as a federal university did not charge tuition fee talkless of increasing same.

He however clarified that the report was out to achieve no more or less than creating panic among Nigerian parents, which he dismissed as unnecessary.

The statement read: “The attention of the management of the University of Ilorin has been drawn to news reports in some newspapers today (Tuesday) listing Unilorin among 38 universities that have increased their tuition fees.

“We want to state categorically that there is no iota of truth in the report. The university’s management has never met to decide on any fees increase because we are still running the 2016/2017 academic session.

“And in any case, Unilorin, being a federal government institution doesn’t charge tuition fees, as tuition is free in public universities. The little charges we collect are for utilities and not for tuition.

“So, that report was meant to cause unnecessary panic among Nigerian parents,” the statement said.

Also reacting to the reports, a respondent of The DEFENDER asked what the unions wanted to achieve by spreading fake and destructive information through the press against the institutions upon which dependent their lives and deaths.

“Remember ASUU once engaged in campaigns of calumny against UNILORIN asking that certificate of the university should not be recognised. Remember even some faceless lecturers within the school claiming ASUU went ahead, when those campaigns failed, to blackmail the immediate past and sitting VCs of the institution asking EFCC to probe them as if EFCC is a zombie.

“Now that they failed with UNILORIN, they seem to have designed another tactics involving other universities just to confuse our already ailing education system in Nigeria currently being revived by the Buhari administration. What positive contribution can any of these academic unions lay claim to have made to our educational development in Nigeria?

” As for you members of the press, know that yes you are so powerful but use your power well and in line with the ethics of the journalism profession by ensuring that any news you publish or broadcast must be devoid of falsehood. Also know that even when a news is true, patriotism demands proper management of that truth as sometimes truth, if not well managed, can set a whole country ablaze.

“That is truth in two faces, how much more when the news is fake full of falsehoods. Let us be careful, fear God and know that we as individuals will always be outlived by institutions. What will be left of us is what history will tell about us,” the respondent spoke on his surpise that media would continue to promote the unions despite records of how they have sabotaged education system in the disguise of fighting for better academic condition.
